The Bridge: Sun Protection
Slip! Slop! Slap! And Wrap!
Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat and wrap on sunglasses.
This is the American Cancer Society’s slogan that makes it easy to remember how to protect yourself from the sun’s damaging UV rays. In the U.S., skin cancer is the most common form of cancer with more than 4 million new cases diagnosed each year. The number of skin cancers diagnosed each year outweighs ALL other types of cancers combined. The odds of developing skin cancer rise as you age; in fact, between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have at least on skin cancer in their lifetime. Many older adults think that there’s no point in protecting themselves since the damage has been done, but it is never too late to help prevent further damage and lower your skin cancer risk.
